Project Background
This beautiful ancient Sussex woodland is hundreds of years old and has been treasured by many people and animals throughout the generations.
We wish to preserve this ancient woodland landscape now and for the future and encourage native mammals, butterflies, moths, birds, plants and insects to feel safe in this woodland habitat. Many species already live in the wood. Some are passing through and some are seasonal visitors.
Human activity, habitat loss and climate change are threatening many species of animals, birds and plants which are in decline in the UK. Scientific research is revealing that certain species of trees are finding it hard to adapt to the changeable weather patterns. One mature tree alone can be a semi/permanent home to thousands of species of animals, plants, insects and fungi. Hence the 3 of us, Liz, Liz and Adam who own the wood wish it to become a protected natural habitat and research project for the local community to treasure.
We want the wood to thrive and rejuvenate to its former glory with the help of local conservation organisations and the local community to provide solid evidence-based research to help with the long term health of the wood and all who dwell in it.
We aim to provide regular updates on how the project is going, including what species of animals and plants we have seen and what new arrivals have been spotted.
Events and invited volunteer days will also be planned in the wood and made available on the website.
We invite you to respect this special place by taking any litter home and keeping dogs on leads.
When entering the wood:
- Please take a moment
- Let go of your worries
- Breathe with the trees, as they are the lungs of the earth
- With gratitude in your heart embrace all of Nature’s bounty
